Just a bit of news…

Sorry for the lack of posts lately. I’ve decided to start a vegetarian club on campus, which is going pretty well. I’ve been trying to get in contact with the person in charge of student clubs, but she’s been out for awhile. But there was a good turnout considering we’re not an official club yet [...]

Awesome fridge

This post doesn’t have much to do with veganism other than that I would love to fill this baby with yummy vegan treats, so I apologize.
This fridge from the Electrolux Design Lab 2008 lets you stack separate compartments. Each compartment can be kept at a degree that you choose, saving energy. Plus, it would look [...]

Scientist at Research Lab Fired

Guy Grimsley, a 65 year old scientist working for a research lab in Nevada that does testing on animals was fired because he presentened an opposition to “cruel and inhumane mistreatment” of the 32 monkey test subjects.
I love when people working in an industry such as animal testing or factory farming come out against mistreatment [...]

Vegan Eats

The only thing worse than being vegan on my campus is being a vegan without a car on my campus. My university is decently big, around 9,000 students, but we have no public transportation, no grocery stores within walking distance, and nothing really for a vegan to eat. Granted, we do have three great restaurants [...]

Heartbreaking Pictures of Whale Slaughter

Over at earthfirst.com (yay! for Earth First!), there are some striking and heartbreaking photographs of an annual whale slaugher in the Faroe Islands, Denmark. From the site:
“Ironically, this practice, called grindadrĂ¡p, is diminishing the population of 5,000 islanders. Many of them get sick and die from high mercury levels in the whales. Mentally retarded children [...]

Animals and Death

Natalie Angier has written an article for the New York Times about animal behavoir towards death. In it, she cites the example of a gorilla named Gana who carried around her son’s corpse after he died:
“Nobody knows what emotions swept through Gana’s head and heart as she persisted in cradling and nuzzling the remains of [...]

Heading toward a victory in Great Britain?

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has been working on raising awareness about Buckingham Palace’s guard’s bear skin hats, and it looks like it’s starting to pay off. The Ministry of Denfense is meeting with PETA this week in order to talk about the use of synthetic materials for the hats. According to [...]

How many miles does your diet represent?

From Planetsave:
Following an omnivorous diet for one year is comparable to driving 2,956 miles. Meanwhile, vegetarians travel half as far at 1,508 miles, and vegans rank a mere 391 miles.
haha, we win again.

Hang out with other vegans…online

All of us have or have had either a MySpace or Facebook page. On one hand, it’s disturbing how eager we are to condense our entire lives into a solitary page. However, social networking sites are a great way to share ideas and communicate with people with similar interests.
VegSpace is sort of like MySpace for [...]

Dissection

The dissection of animals in schools has been going on for far too long, especially since there are many great alternatives. According to the Humane Society, there are approximately 12 million vertebrate and invertebrate creatures dissected each year in schools. I’m going to tell you about some of these new methods, but first I’m going [...]

Farm Cats Enjoying a Summer Treat

Over at Vegan Eats & Treats, Amey posted pictures of her companion animals eating corn. Which made me want to show my own pictures.
The first two are pictures of one of the two locations I work at during the summer (the other is a vegetable stand), followed by the three pictures of one of the [...]
