People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has been working on raising awareness about Buckingham Palace’s guard’s bear skin hats, and it looks like it’s starting to pay off. The Ministry of Denfense is meeting with PETA this week in order to talk about the use of synthetic materials for the hats. According to Ecorazzi, “PETA has tapped British designer Vivienne Westwood to come up with something ‘innovative,’ while Stella McCartney and the US designer Marc Bouwer have both agreed to produce caps if comminissioned by the MoD.”

I know a lot of people, even activists within the animal rights community, have issues with PETA, particularly their tactics for getting public and media attention (such as the infamous “lettuce ladies”). But sometimes you’ve got to give them credit. They can put enough pressure on a company, organization, or, in this case, a government to get something done in the name of animals.
